After your Massage: Keep it Simple

You just got off the massage table. Now what? You do not need a complicated routine, a special drink or a list of things to get perfectly right. Start by tuning into how you feel.

Water is for hydration, not a detox

You may have heard that massage releases toxins and that drinking lots of water afterward will flush them out. There is no scientific evidence to back that up. Have water because you are thirsty or because it is part of your usual routine, not because you need to undo something the massage did. Most of the time a massage therapist recommends drinking water, it's to keep your muscles hydrated (Hello Arizona). Did you know we can tell when you're dehydrated by how your muscles feel during a massage?

Give yourself a moment

Before you jump back into your day, take a minute to check in. How does your neck feel when you turn your head? Is there an area you want us to know about next time? Maybe you feel relaxed. Maybe you are still sorting out what changed. There is no one feeling you are supposed to have. If you came in with an issue that your therapist addressed, check in and see how it compares now that you've had the work done. Massage is incredible for improving body awareness, we just have to slow down and listen.

Keep the conversation going

Your feedback helps us plan future sessions. Tell us what felt useful, what felt like too much and what you would like to approach differently. If you notice discomfort afterward, let us know rather than assuming it proves the massage worked. Pain is not a scorecard for a good session.

Know when to get medical help

Massage is not a replacement for medical care. New, severe or worsening symptoms belong with a health care professional, not a promise that they are just part of a detox. If you have a health condition or are unsure whether massage is appropriate, talk with your clinician and share that information with your therapist.
