Prenatal Massage, Trimester by Trimester: What to Expect

You're pregnant, yay! And your body is already hard at work. Between the growing belly, shifting hormones and a center of gravity that seems to change by the week, pregnancy asks a LOT of you. Prenatal massage is one of the best ways to give some of that care back.

One question we hear all the time: "What will it actually be like?" The honest answer is that it changes as you do. Here's a peek at what prenatal massage can look like through each stage of pregnancy.

First Trimester: Rest, Reset, Reconnect

Those early weeks can be quietly exhausting. Nausea, fatigue and all the big feelings that come with a positive test can leave you running on empty, even before anyone else knows you're expecting. Massage in this stage is all about calm. Think gentle, soothing work that helps you rest, ease tension from your neck and shoulders, and simply breathe. It's also a great time to talk with your therapist about your health history and goals for the months ahead. As always, check in with your care provider about anything specific to your pregnancy.

Second Trimester: The Sweet Spot

For many people, the second trimester brings a little more energy and a lot more belly. This is when your low back, hips and ribs start to feel the stretch. Your therapist will begin using supportive positioning (often side-lying with pillows) so you and baby are comfortable and supported the whole session. Focus areas usually shift to the low back, hips, glutes and legs to help with the aches that come with a changing posture. Plenty of clients tell us this is when massage goes from "nice treat" to "non-negotiable."

Third Trimester: Comfort and Getting Ready for Birth

The home stretch! Sleep gets harder, swelling can show up in your feet and ankles, and your hips may have some opinions about all of it. Third trimester massage focuses on relief and relaxation: easing hip and back tension, supporting circulation, and helping you actually rest. It's also a wonderful time to learn comfort measures your partner or support person can use during labor. Bodywork you receive now can carry right into the birth space.

Why Work With a Perinatal Massage Specialist?

Pregnancy isn't the time for a one-size-fits-all massage. A therapist trained in prenatal care knows how to position you safely, which areas need extra care, and how to adjust as your body changes from visit to visit. At Asher Birth & Body, our Licensed Massage Therapists specialize in the birthing year, from those first weeks all the way through postpartum.

Ready to Feel More at Home in Your Body?

Wherever you are in your pregnancy, we'd love to support you. Book a prenatal massage with our team, or reach out with any questions. And if you know someone who's expecting, share this with them. Growing a human is a BIG job, and nobody should do it without a little extra care.
