Doula vs. Midwife: Understanding the Differences

kaytlin1

When planning for childbirth, many parents consider hiring a doula or a midwife—but what’s the difference? While both provide essential support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, their roles are distinct. Here are the top three differences between a doula and a midwife.

1. Medical vs. Non-Medical Care

A midwife is a trained healthcare professional who provides medical care throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. They can monitor fetal development, perform medical exams, help birthing people deliver their babies, and even prescribe medications in some states.

A doula, on the other hand, is a non-medical support person. Their focus is on emotional, physical, and informational support, helping parents feel empowered and comfortable during birth—but they do not provide medical care.

2. Clinical Expertise vs. Emotional Support

A midwife is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy birth. They assess vital signs, check for complications, and can intervene if necessary. If a situation becomes high-risk, midwives may transfer care to a doctor.

A doula is there to provide comfort and encouragement. They offer pain-management techniques like breathing exercises, massage, and position changes. Doulas also act as an advocate, ensuring the birthing parent’s preferences are respected.

3. Who They Support

A midwife primarily focuses on the medical needs of the birthing parent and baby. While they offer some emotional support, their main role is clinical care.

A doula supports the entire family, including the partner. They help the birthing person feel calm and confident and also guide partners on how to be actively involved in the birth process. Postpartum doulas continue this support, assisting with newborn care, breastfeeding, and emotional recovery.

Which One Do You Need?

If you're looking for medical care during pregnancy and birth, a midwife is essential. If you want continuous emotional and physical support during labor, a doula is an excellent choice. Many families choose to have both, creating a well-rounded support system for a positive birth experience.

Would you consider hiring a doula, a midwife, or both?
